The four elements of cleaning -aka: the four fundamentals of soil suspension

A phrase you may sometimes hear about cleaning is that 'it isn't rocket science'. Those that utter this ubiquitous modern idiom often do so out of ignorance. Some, though, will use terms like this to demean the industry. They, of course, have a valid point about the rocket part, but I will always take them to task about the other part of the phrase, because cleaning is very much a science. In fact, it is not rocket science but it is not 'no science'. In 1961, when the founders of the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) were searching for a name, there was no doubt in their minds that cleaning, particularly with the use of chemicals, had enough scientific connections to justify incorporating the word 'science' into the Institute's name.
