Particles are emitted into the atmosphere from a wide range of natural and known toxic sources, including diesel vehicle exhaust emissions. The current National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter in the United States (U.S.) set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulate the mass concentration of particles in the atmosphere and do not distinguish among sources. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently contracted with the University of California, Davis (UCD), to develop a system for collecting particles by source from the atmosphere suitable for toxicity testing. In this work, a single particle mass spectrometer identified particle sources in real time.
