EUROPEAN COMMISSION LAUNCHES CLEAN FUEL STRATEGY

The European transport sector is 94 percent dependent on oil, of which 84.3 percent is imported. The European Commission's (EC's) Transport 2050 Strategy aims to break the transport sector's dependence on oil and proposes a target of 60 percent greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2050. It sets goals for the different modes of transport, including halving the use of conventionally fueled cars in urban transport by 2030 and phasing them out in cities by 2050. These goals cannot be achieved without a major market entry by alternative transportation fuels.
