Up to three million fridges are scrapped in the UK every year and their disposal is about to undergo a revolution. As part of a wider push to reduce the amount of harmful CFCs and related compounds released into the atmosphere, EC Regulations 2037/2000 are about to impose strict recycling requirements on domestic fridges and freezers. The rules, set to come into force on 1 January 2002, will make it illegal to dispose of fridges without capturing and destroying the ozone-depleting substances (ODS) contained within them.
