DESIGNING FOR LARGE SCALE IN-VESSEL COMPOSTING

摘要

The use of in-vessel composting to sanitise and stabilise a variety of organic wastes including biosolids and other biomaterials has considerable potential in the UK. To exploit this potential, a large scale in-vessel composting system is being developed in Clifton Marsh (NW) to recycle green waste and biosolids for beneficial use. A demonstration plant (8,000 tpa) has been constructed and been operational since February 2001. The work has been funded by landfill tax credits made available by Lancashire Waste Services (LWS). Results to date indicate that good operational control (temperature and moisture) can be gained using an induced-draft aeration system to produce a fully sanitised biosolids product suitable for further windrow maturation. In the next stage of the work, plans are being developed for a full-scale facility which would provide a treatment capacity of up to 50,000 tpa.
