摘要

Airports are like mini cities and, with more and more of us taking advantage of cheap air fares, Britain's have never been busier. So, the British Airport Authority's sustainable waste management strategy faces an uphill struggle perhaps, as it sets out to achieve a reduction of the amount of waste per passenger in the next two years. Last year alone, the number of people using the Authority's airports - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow and Edinburgh - rose from 121.9 to 127.7 million. The strategy, which was first developed in 2000, aims to bring airport waste management, as part or a wider commitment to sustainability, into line with local and national government objectives. As the airport sites are in both England and Scotland, there are the differing strategies to consider too. The main objectives of the strategy are to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and increase recycling, alongside reaching targets for waste minimisation.
