A Change For the Better?

The UK was required to adapt its existing special waste legislation due to amendments to the European Hazardous Waste List, which increases the amount of wastes classified as hazardous. This list is now incorporated into the European Waste Catalogue (EWC). The Special Waste Regulations (SWRs) of 1996 have failed to fully implement the Hazardous Waste Directive and, therefore, require up-dating. It is also felt there is room for improving the existing regime by streamlining the process from production to a suitable final treatment or disposal facility.
