THE REVIEW OF THE INSTITUTION'S CONSTITUTION -WHERE ARE WE NOW?

During the last 18 months, the Institution has reviewed its constitution and system of governance. The Institution is now a company incorporated by Royal Charter, and is a charity with the elected General Councillors as its trustees. There were two main reasons for the review so soon after being granted our Royal Charter: 1. To comply with some recommendations made to the Privy Council during the application process 2. To modernise and streamline our systems of governance. First, when the Institution applied for its Charter in 2001, the Privy Council advised that the way the Council of the Institution is elected should be amended to meet the recommendations of the Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life. This means that the term of office of councillors/trustees should be limited, and followed by a 'stand down' period before they can be re-elected.
