Often celebrated by we Brits as being top of the pile when it comes to keeping it clean, this collection of countries are apparently fighting the same battles as we are to rid the streets of rubbish. And they're also finding the going tough when it comes to cracking down on graffiti, animal faeces, fly-tipping and even the waste that the public creates. Don't just take my word for it. Delegates from these countries actually admitted as much themselves at an international conference held recently in Vienna (the ISWA Cleaner Cities convention, 20nd-23rd October). Staff from the local university were there to back them up too, with a major research programme examining the level of litter in five European cities. And if they weren't presenting on the problem, they were more than keen to share their experiences from the floor.
