MELBOURNE'S RECENT RECYCLING INITIATIVES

The Australian State of Victoria has recently produced its Waste Management Strategy covering a period of 10 years from 2002. Towards Zero Waste: a Materials Efficiency Strategy for Victoria' was developed by EcoRecycle Victoria. It is aimed at changing purchasing habits as well as setting exacting targets for waste generated and recovered. EcoRecycle Victoria is funded through the Victoria landfill tax, now set at A$5 per tonne, and hazardous waste at $10 per tonne, but increasing at the rate of A$1 per tonne per annum over the next five years. All the proceeds of the tax are recycled back to promote more sustainable waste management practices with the funding provided to EcoRecycle and the EPA initially. In contrast, in New South Wales A$19 per tonne landfill tax is provided straight to the Exchequer.
