OUTSOURCING TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT

It is now common practice for companies to outsource their transport management responsibilities, or some elements of fleet management or maintenance, to external experts, so that they can focus on their core activities, improve financial performance and service levels. There are a range of outsource options available, however the most popular by far are fleet management and contract hire. Fleet management has increased in sophistication over the past 10 years, and companies specialise in what can best be described as mobile asset management - reaching beyond the usual management of commercial and municipal vehicles. There are considerable cost benefits to outsourcing fleet management, for example, three companies in Lex Transfleet's portfolio have seen major improvements. One customer achieved a fleet reduction of 1 5 per cent, together with a 12 per cent reduction in its internal administration costs, resulting in an annualised saving in excess of￡1.5 million.
