The most popular refuse collection vehicle body design is the rear-loading compaction type. Despite the introduction of several innovative side-loading approaches the flexibility of rear-loaders mean they will remain the dominant design for many years. A variation on the rear-loading theme has been the introduction of the split-body concept. Some manufacturers fit two completely separate bodies to the vehicle chassis, each possessing its own packer and ejection plates, together with individual tailgate and hopper assemblies. Others use a simple vertical dividing wall running the length of the body with separate ejector and packer plates but a single divided tailgate.
