Businesses now realise that poor environmental performance has consequences for profitability, competitiveness, reputation and staff morale. We have come a long way in 10 years. In 1994 just 20 percent of businesses in the UK accepted the link between environmental performance and profitability; today that figure is nearer 50 percent. A decade after its launch Envirowise has helped businesses to save more than £1 billion, but there is still much to do. On 16 July 2004, businesses received a fresh reminder of the importance of sound environmental performance. Amendments to the Landfill Directive made it illegal to dispose of hazardous waste by mixing it with non-hazardous waste. This means that all hazardous waste must be treated before it is disposed of. Only 12 landfill sites are currently able to cope with hazardous waste - none of which are in the southeast of England or Wales.
