Closed Loop Recycling (CLR) was established in Dagenham, East London in 2008 to process PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles used for carbonated beverages and mineral water and HDPE (high-density polyethylene) milk bottles. The processed material can then be introduced as a constituent of new bottles and other food contact packaging items. For the first time in the UK we have the opportunity to "close the loop" for the plastic drfnks containers in the same way we have had for glass, steel and aluminium drinks containers for decades. According to Nick Cliffe, the marketing and communications manager for CLR, the plant's initial design was based on Australian syster but, over the six years since its initial conception, more of the design has become home grown.
