Figures released during the summer show that the number of single-use carrier bags used in the UK in the last three years has nearly halved from 870m to 450m.rnSome publicity sources chose to promote this as the "UK's leading supermarkets have cut the number of bags used," whilst others, including Hilary Benn, saw it as more of a joint success involving the customer as well as the retailer.rnIn early 2006, 21 major brand name retailers promised to reduce the environmental impact and use of carrier bags by 25 percent by the end of 2008. Results showed that the target for reduction in total bag numbers used across participating retailers was slightly exceeded and there was also a 40 percent reduction in the environmental impact of carrier bags in the same period (how this was measured is not recorded).
