Q Is it illegal to see second-hand furniture sold without a fire label on it? And what legislation states this? Alt is illegal to supply secondhand domestic upholstered furniture, furnishings and other products containing upholstery in the course of business without first ensuring that it carries an appropriate fire label under the Furniture and Furnishing (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. The exception to this is furniture manufactured before 1 January 1950. The 1988 Regulations apply to those who supply new furniture, furnishings or re-upholstery services. This includes manufacturers, retailers and importers as well as anyone who supplies filling materials and fabrics to the furniture industry or direct to consumers and those who supply furniture second-hand in the course of business, including auctioneers and charity shops.
