BT's Better Future

This is a condensed account of a journey - some of it personal - about yachts, bicycles and letterboxes, and how this has led to the beginning of the implementation of the circular economy within BT. I have refrained from numerous corporate environmental performance statistics because I want to provide a glimpse of the passion and dedication that can exist at the interface of corporate culture and environmental responsibility, creating a "Better Future". Three years before joining BT in 1998 I was lying in the radiotherapy theatre again, reflecting on the impact of endocrine disrupters, heavy metals and other pathogens in the materials I had used as an industrial designer; the mountains of waste products I felt personally responsible for, and the encouragement of a throw-away society with its instant-gratification culture. Many of us have "a moment" of significant reflection in life, and in that theatre I had mine.
