Life Begins At 40

The Middle East oil crises in the early 1970s focussed companies' attention on making better use of energy; many appointed energy managers for the first time. Major brands and retailers knew that packaging was necessary to protect food and other goods from the farm or factory into people's homes but, in the 1970s, there was little information about the environmental and social impact of such increasingly complex supply systems. A small group of companies and their main packaging suppliers set up INCPEN in 1974 to establish some basic facts and data about packaging: what materials and energy were used, what happened to it after use and what impact did it have on society? One of the first reports was an assessment of how much energy was used in the supply chain.
