Seeking Council

Frustration is growing with the coalition's approach to waste and resource policy. Amongst the many examples of counterproductive action or inaction, perhaps the most damning has been the Treasury's unwillingness to support a review of resource risks to the UK, or to provide any support for more resource efficient products or business models. Other disappointments include the decision of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) not to adapt producer responsibility legislation for better designed electronic and electrical equipment, despite advice from its own working group that it should; DCLG's continued support for weekly rubbish collections; and Defra's announcement that it was "stepping back" from various areas of waste policy where there is no clear market failure, despite widespread concern that the data is too poor to identify whether there are market failures. Important opportunities are being missed due to a lack of policy support.
