Circular Economy Package: European Parliament Raises The Stakes

The Environment Committee of the European Parliament is likely to put forward radical changes to the European Commission's circular economy proposals, following the publication of recommendations made by the Committee's Rapporteur, Italian MEP Simona Bonafe. Ms Bonafe's report on the Commission's proposals to update the EU Waste Framework Directive runs to 120 pages and contains 165 suggested amendments to the proposals. She has also produced separate reports on the Commission proposals to update the Landfill, Packaging and Producer Responsibility Directives. All of these draft amendments, and any others tabled by MEPs on the Environment Committee by 30 June, will be put to the vote in October or November. If passed by the Environment Committee and by the European Parliament as a whole, these amendments will form the basis of negotiations between the Parliament and the EU member states represented in the Council of Environment Ministers, which will determine the final shape of the Circular Economy Package.
