Whilst underground bin systems (UBS) are commonplace across Europe and well-established as an efficient collection mechanism for waste management, they are considered a relatively new development in the UK. The reality, however, is that UBS have been used in the UK for over a decade and to great effect... so why are they not used more widely? Reality shows that multiple authorities in the UK using UBS have realised efficiencies and wider benefits, so perhaps the limited take up is simply that some are unaware of the benefits and opportunities and see only the barriers (perceived or real). Moreover, many are unaware of the different types of UBS available, ranging from the underground lift - using traditional 1,100-litre containers -to the UBS requiring a crane to lift them out of the ground. But more authorities are considering the benefits of UBS and Aberdeen City Council is amongst that number.
