The triumvirate of Councillor Lisa Trickett - cabinet I member for clean streets, recycling and the　environment; Jacqui Kennedy - corporate director for place; and Antony Greener - director of waste management are waiting for me to arrive. Between them they know the waste management practises of Birmingham inside　out. They also seem to form a formidable team that is full of enthusiasm for the job at hand. Antony is the newest addition to the team, joining in September 2016, while Jacqui and Cllr Trickett have been planning and managing Birmingham's waste　Iand recycling since the summers of 2015 and 2014 respectively. Jacqui begins by filling me in on the background to the plans, explaining that Birmingham City Council (BCC) had a 25-year waste disposal contract with Veolia, due for renewal in 2019. "At the time it was considered a cutting-edge contract," she explained, including the construction of an energy from waste facility. But a new outlook, driven by the appointment of Cllr Trickett, and a decision to not treat waste disposal in isolation, but to consider a "whole system, whole place" approach, has led it to considering new contract options, with an increased focus on the "reduce, reuse, recycle" mantra.
