Insulation manufacturer Kingspan has announced a three-year partnership with the sustainable fashion brand Ecoalf to collect 150 tonnes of ocean plastic for use in its supply chain. Kingspan makes insulation for low-carbon buildings out of recycled plastic and, under the new initiative, will add recycled ocean plastic into its supply chain for the first time. The firm will help remove plastic waste from the Mediterranean through the Ecoalf Foundation's network of fishermen. It will then reuse as much as it can in its production facility near Barcelona, Spain. The partnership will contribute to the manufacturer's goal of recycling a billion plastic bottles each year by 2025. Gene Murtagh, chief executive of Kingspan Group, said: 'With the construction industry contributing 30 per cent of the global waste that goes into landfill, it is vital that we find ways to reduce waste at all points in the supply chain.' Elsewhere, a consortium has been formed between Nestle Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe to bring a "breakthrough' recycling technology to market. The process, pioneered by French biotech company Carbios, uses enzymes to recycle a much broader range of PET plastics and polyester fibre feedstock. It has the potential to recycle PET plastics repeatedly and pave the way for 100 per cent recycled PET content in products.
