Christopher Lew's book is the first military history of the 1945-49 civil war in China in a Western language since Lionel Chassin's classic, The Communist Conquest of China: A History of the Civil War, 1945-49 (Harvard, in translation from the French, 1965). Besides being published over 40 years apart, the two books operate on different planes and so cannot be usefully compared. Lew's study is comprehensive in scope, scholarly and firmly based on the plethora of Chinese publications that have appeared since the 1970s. Chassin, who served as the French military attache during the latter stages of the war, wrote as a contemporary witness.
