All engineers and contractors can face liability for environmental damages during a project, even if they work on "nonenvironmental" programs. But managers can control these risks so they do not become business catastrophes. For too long, many industries have ignored or avoided the issue of environmental liability. Construction has been no exception. Clinging to the idea that if they don't perform environmental services they don't have environmental risks, many engineers and contractors convince themselves that environment-related litigation will not be a problem. In fact, the problem does affect this industry, and it's growing. To succeed, construction and engineering firms must incorporate environmental risk management into every facet of their business strategy. To do otherwise invites disaster.
