Helping a 50 year old water purification works to cope with highly polluted water

Rustenburg Local Municipality used to obtain most of its domestic water from the local Bospoort water purification works, which was built in the mid-1950s. As the town grew, it had to find alternative sources of water. It currently receives water from Rand Water (through the Barnardsvlei system and thus effectively from the Vaal River system) as well as through a joint scheme between Rand Water and Magalies Water through the so-called Vaalkop system. This scheme obtains its water from Magalies Waters Vaalkop water purification works.
