U.S. Navy Adapts Historic Building For Office Space

A cavernous Washington, D.C., factory building that was used to manufacture shipboard guns during World War II has been adapted for use as modern office space. The building is part of a $160-mil-lion, 1 million sq ft (92,900 m~2) reuse project that grew out of a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) base realignment. The project began when the DOD decided to relocate more than 4,000 office workers to the waterfront Navy Yard— nearly doubling its occupancy. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) decided to reuse two existing buildings—one being the gun factory— and renovate three floors of another. They also demolished five structures to erect one entirely new building and an eight-deck parking garage.
