Rising 225 m above ground in the heart of Mexico City, the recently completed Torre Mayor (Tallest Tower) stands as one of the world's safest buildings in one of the world's most active seismic zones. That the construction of such a tall structure would be attempted in such a locale is testament to the inventiveness brought to bear on the considerable geotechnical and structural engineering challenges posed by the project. The Torre Mayor is an office tower conceived by its Toronto-based developer, Reich-mann International, as Mexico City's premier corporate landmark―and as both a literal and figurative anchor of the city's major financial district. Designed by the Toronto architecture firms Adamson Associates and the Zeidler Grin-nell Partnership, the tower is a dramatic amalgam of steel, granite, concrete, and glass―a rectangular tower juxtaposed with a curved facade that commands a view one of the city's most historic grand avenues: the Paseo de la Reforma, which was built by the Emperor Maximilian in the mid-19th century.
