Nuclear Laboratory Transformed into High-Tech Office Park

For nearly 50 years the Mound Plant, a nuclear technology development center operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), was a vital part of Miamisburg, a midsize city in Ohio. In 1993, when the DOE closed the plant, thousands of jobs went with it, and what remained for the most part was a 306 acre (124 ha) industrial park contaminated with radioactive material. The sprawling laboratory could easily have become a tremendous burden on the community. But instead of allowing it to decay into a brownfield, Miamisburg residents purchased the site from the DOE―for $10―and are now transforming it into a high-tech office park.
