Architectural Glass Roofs Highlight Museum Addition

The design of a 111,000 sq ft (10,311 m~2) addition to the Peabody Essex Museum, in Salem, Massachusetts, balances the modern look of a glass and steel roof with Salem's historic architecture. Founded in 1799, the museum has a campus layout that in addition to its main building includes 24 buildings of historical importance, most of them concentrated in downtown Salem. The addition is part of a $125-million museum expansion project that also includes the development of a park and the installation of a 200-year-old house brought over from China as an exhibit.
