One of the country's most populated and congested areas is about to receive its own underground light-rail station. The Bergenline Avenue station, part of NJ Transit's Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, will serve Union City, West New York, North Bergen, and Wee-hawken. It will be situated 150 ft (45.7 m) belowground and will utilize a freight railroad tunnel built in the 1880s. Located in Union City on the northwest corner of Bergenline Avenue and 49th Street, the station will be the light-rail system's busiest, serving an expected 8,200 people per day. Workers are now completing the concrete work on the walls of the chamber. The station's construction began in 2002 and is scheduled to be completed before the end of 2005.
