Twenty-six years after first making headlines, Love Canal has been removed from the National Priorities List (NPL), a compilation of major sites contaminated with hazardous waste that is maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Located in Niagara Falls, New York, the 350 acre (142 ha) Love Canal site—encompassing the 16 acre (6.5 ha) chemical landfill and the area surrounding it—was one of the original entries on the NPL, and the notoriety of the site prompted legislators in 1980 to enact the Superfund program, formally known as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
