Salt Lake City's Mormon Tabernacle Receives Seismic Upgrade

More than a century and a half ago, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or Mormons, settled in Salt Lake City. On a city block now known as Temple Square, they built elaborate religious buildings, among them a temple, an assembly hall, and a large, dome-shaped tabernacle. Before the construction of a large con- ference center north of Temple Square, the tabernacle was the main gathering place for ecclesiastical conferences and is still the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It has been used extensively over the past 140 years, and church leaders and historic preservationists wish to give the structure the strength to survive earthquakes as well.
