摘要

So seismically deficient and damaged were the buildings making up San Francisco's de Young Museum from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that emergency bracing and repairs were required for continued occupancy. Its rebirth in 2005 as a striking copper-clad edifice has recaptured its position as a cultural icon and ensured its survival during a significant seismic event.
