The collapse on August 1 of the bridge in Minneapolis that carried Interstate 35W over the Mississippi has led to a renewed emphasis on bridge safety on Capitol Hill. Because the Minneapolis bridge had been rated "structurally deficient" before its destruction, efforts to repair, rehabilitate, or replace similarly rated bridges have received particular attention, chiefly in the form of a proposal developed by Representative Jim Oberstar (D-Minnesota), the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. His plan would create a trust fund dedicated to financing improvements to structurally deficient bridges.
