Apex Oil Must Help Remediate Major Petroleum Contamination In Illinois

Federal and state environmental officials are hopeful that a recent court decision will invigorate efforts to remediate severe soil and groundwater contamination in Hartford, Illinois. For decades, residents of the small town have endured numerous health and safety problems resulting from the presence of millions of gallons of gasoline and other petroleum products underground, the result of chronic leaks and spills from nearby refineries and pipelines. In late July the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois ordered the Apex Oil Company, Inc., of Clayton, Missouri, to take part in planned actions to remove the petroleum contamination from beneath Hartford. A privately owned oil trading company, Apex Oil is a legal successor to companies that had been involved in refinery operations in Hartford.
