NIST: World Trade Center Building 7 is First Known Case of a Tall Building Collapsing 'Primarily' from Fire

The destruction in New York City of the World Trade Center's Building 7, a 47-story structure that suffered a progressive collapse in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is "the first known instance of the total collapse of a tall building primarily due to fires," according to a draft of the Final Report on the Collapse of World Trade Center Building 7, released in late August by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), based in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The report is the culmination of NIST's three-year scientific and technical building and fire safety investigation into the collapse of the structure, which nist refers to as WTC 7 in its report. At press time the report was still in its public comment phase.
