Singapore Plans Two More Reuse Plants, Increasing Its Reliance On Reclaimed Water

Facing a pressing need to diversify its water supplies, Singapore to an increasing extent has turned to reclaimed water. Recent decreases in the cost of membrane technology have facilitated Singapore's growing reliance on reclaimed water. If its plans for two recently announced treatment plants are any guide, the Public Utilities Board (pub) will continue to rely on membrane processes as it seeks to ensure viable water supplies for the future. One of the planned facilities is the Changi NEWater Plant ("NEwater" being the name given by the pub to the water produced by a particular recycling process, described below). The Changi plant will be Singapore's largest water recycling facility when it reaches full capacity, in 2010. The other project is a membrane bioreactor (mbr) facility that is scheduled to begin operations that same year at the existing Jurong Water Reclamation Plant.
