In January 2007 the National Science Board-the governing body of the National Science Foundation (nsf)-released a report calling for a significant increase in research on hurricanes. Entitled Hurricane Warning: The Critical Need for a National Hurricane Research Initiative, the report made a series of research and budgetary recommendations. Although members of Congress from hurricane-prone states were quick to introduce legislation to carry out the report's recommendations, the bills have languished in committee. However, a recent hearing on one such bill by two subcommittees of the House Committee on Science and Technology may help revive interest on Capitol Hill in developing a more focused and comprehensive approach to hurricane research.
