In this summer's hit movie Iron Man, the engineer and inventor played by Robert Downey, Jr., makes extensive use of a visual modeling system to "build" and refine his outrageously advanced suit of armor before actually building it. The tool, though used to illustrate a fantastic comic book idea, is similar both in purpose and in its workings to the concept of building information modeling, widely known as BIM. The BIM Handbook bills itself as a "guide," but it is also a history-a compendium of case studies, a detailed look at the underlying software and other technology, and a forward-looking analysis of how bim will exert increasing influence on the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated.
