Modular Mooring

The U.S. Navy owns and manages an inventory of large facilities that includes more than 500 piers and wharves. These waterfront structures, which represent a significant capital investment, were largely built during wartime-from World War II into the cold war era. Thus, the pier and wharf inventory is aging quickly; approximately 75 percent of the structures are more than 42 years old. Since these structures have a typical design life of 50 years, the current inventory creates a substantial challenge for the navy with regard to maintenance, repair, and replacement.
