Peoria Lake Dredging Project Kicks Off Illinois River Basin Restoration

Construction is scheduled to begin this month on the Peoria Riverfront Project, an effort to address decades of sedimentation and restore habitat for fish and other wildlife in Peoria Lake, in Peoria, Illinois. The project, which will involve dredging a section of the lake and beneficially reusing the dredged material to create three islands, represents the first step in an immense plan to improve the ecological health of the vast Illinois River basin. Encompassing 30,000 sq mi (77,700 km~2), the basin occupies more than 40 percent of the land area of Illinois and is home to 90 percent of the state's population.
