Inflatable Design Makes Performance Venue Mobile

The design for what would be the largest mobile performing arts venue in the world relies on a hexagonal pattern comprising inflatable tubes that wrap around a lightweight aluminum frame to house upward of 3,500 people for performances and cultural events. The 3,900 m2 Mobile Performance Venue, designed by Norway's Various Architects, based in Oslo, would be easily transportable and constructable and would provide a distinctive structure for traveling shows. Arts Alliance Productions, of London, commissioned the design to serve as a stage for the show Identity of the Soul, a five- screen cinematic production based on the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen's epic poem "Terje Vigen." The production company is currently trying to gain funding for the structure, which is expected to travel around the world and later could be rented for other performances. "They wanted something iconic and something that would represent them worldwide that no one had ever seen before," says Jim Dodson, a partner of Various Architects.
