ONE OF THE tallest buildings in the United States has qualified for gold certification in the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system for existing buildings. The 102-story Empire State Building is undergoing a $550-million renovation overhaul of the skyscraper's building management system to reduce heating and cooling requirements. The improvements are expected to reduce the building's total carbon emissions by approximately 105,000 metric tons over the next 15 years. The Empire State Building Company, the firm that operates the building, has also purchased carbon offsets total the LEED rating system for commercial interiors.
