摘要

WHEN BOSTON'S Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) was interviewing engineering firms to help design its new Art of the Americas Wing and other additions, the Cambridge, Massachusetts, office of the international engineering firm Weid-linger As-sociates, Inc., found an artistic way to win the commission. The firm sent its engineers to the archives of the Boston Public Library to study the original structural drawings of the MFA's Beaux-Arts main building, which had been constructed in 1909, as well as the drawings of other structures in the MFA complex, which were mostly completed between 1915 and 1928. The new Art of the Americas Wing and other additions to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts represent both a major renovation and a significant expansion of facilities. The four new structures are adjacent to but seismically separated from the museum's original buildings. The $345-million project also serves as a compelling portrait of how collaboration and inquisitiveness can help a design team and a client find creative solutions to a project's challenges.
