A Steady Course in Trying Times

E can certainly hope that in the coming years ASCE will be able to count on the same level of resources from the federal government for infrastructure endeavors. In recent decades we have come to expect a certain measure of financial support through the periodic renewal of legislation pertaining to transportation, water, dams, disaster preparedness, and so forth. But as we look out on today's political landscape, we see at both the state and federal level greater focus on bringing revenues into balance with expenditures. The talk is not about what we need but about what we can eliminate, not about new programs and new construction but about cuts, layoffs, furloughs, and freezes.
