Deconstructing the Triple Bottom Line

The civil engineering profession has long been committed to engineering practices grounded in sustainability. In recent years that commitment has come to embrace the triple bottom line, a methodology that places equal emphasis on environmental, economic, and social impact. The "triple bottom line" is a term coined by John Elkington, who cofounded the British think tank and strategy consultancy Sustain-Ability in 1987 and who has been described by the London Evening Standard as "a true green business guru" and as "an evangelist for corporate social and environmental responsibility long before it was fashionable."
