Thanks in no small part to a lengthy dry spell of more than a decade affecting parts of Australia, and closer to home the recent severe conditions in the southern United States-in Texas, in particular-drought has in recent years become a much higher-profile marker of climate change or poor planning, or both. Two recent books examine the problem in greater depth, with a specific focus on the American Southwest.
