Engineers Transform Invasive Plant into Helpful Carbon

Engineers at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland have discovered a way to improve Cuba's economy by turning Marabii, an invasive hardwood shrub that has taken over more than 1.5 million ha of land in the Caribbean nation, into a useful form of activated carbon. The carbon can be used in medical treatments for poisoning and overdoses; battery manufacturing; water, gas, and wastewater purification; and-perhaps most significantly for Cuba's economy-rum making.
