As we reported here in the April issue, the Washington Monument was being encased in scaffolding to facilitate the repair work made necessary by the earthquake that struck the region on August 23, 2011. (Also see "Monumental Challenge," by Daniel J. Lemieux, AIA, R.A., M.ASCE, and Terrence F. Paret, M.ASCE, Civil Engineering, December 2012, pages 50-67.) The scaffolding effort has been completed, and when on the evening of July 8 the National Park Service illuminated the monument, squares of light began to appear thanks to 488 lamps incorporated within the scaffolding that are controlled by sensors.
